Engineering Manager — Change Systems
Job description
Netflix is one of the world's leading entertainment services, with over 300 million paid memberships in over 190 countries enjoying TV series, films and games across a wide variety of genres and languages. Members can play, pause and resume watching as much as they want, anytime, anywhere, and can change their plans at any time.
About the Organization
Platform Modernization Engineering (PME) helps keep Netflix's engineering fleet healthy, secure, and current. We design and run the large-scale migration and modernization campaigns that move the fleet forward — from dependency upgrades to infrastructure-level changes — so that individual engineering teams don't have to absorb that toil on their own.
About the Team and the Role
The Change Systems team owns the platforms that make fleet-wide change possible at Netflix. It gives engineering teams across the company a unified way to scope, launch, automate, and validate change at scale — from routine dependency updates to complex, multi-service migrations — with as little manual toil as possible.
The platform already operates at significant scale: over 100 engineering teams run change activities across thousands of repositories, and usage continues to grow year over year. The team's mandate is expanding to match — pushing automation further using AI-assisted code modification, rule-based transformations, and batch orchestration. The goal is to make the majority of change at Netflix low-to-no-effort for the engineers on the receiving end, while giving the teams driving that change the tooling, telemetry, and adoption data they need to move with confidence.
You will lead the engineers who build and operate this platform, based in Warsaw. This is a team with deep end-to-end ownership: they run their own on-call, design the automation and orchestration layers directly, and are pushing the platform toward AI-driven code transformation as a first-class capability rather than a one-off tool.
End-to-end ownership translates into several responsibilities:
- from a technical perspective, acting like a System Architect, driving technical architecture and component integration;
- from a product perspective, wearing the Product Manager hat for Campaigns and defining the vision and strategy for the Campaigns experience;
- from a partnership and stakeholders' perspective, identifying needs, incorporating feedback, aligning across the organization, creating partnerships to drive impact
- from a leadership perspective, acting like a Change Agent and Advocate supporting the overall organization in shaping the mindset and approach around Campaigns (change at scale) in the agentic world;
The platform is at an inflection point, which makes this role particularly important:
- From tooling to platform. Change Systems has built strong point solutions for individual campaigns. The next step is composable, declarative abstractions that every part of the platform — and the teams building on top of it — share a common foundation rather than one-off automation.
- From manual campaign design to AI-assisted execution. GenAI-driven code transformation, contract-based validation, and batch orchestration are becoming core to how campaigns get executed — across code transformation, CI, testing, and delivery to production.
- From reactive to metrics-driven prioritization. Using historical campaign completion data to predict bottlenecks, target specific automation investments, and measure adoption and adherence rather than simply responding to inbound requests.
- From isolated campaigns to a coherent customer experience. Close technical alignment is required with Source Management, Continuous Integration, Resilience Engineering and Delivery Engineering and Security so that campaign recipients experience one coherent platform, not a patchwork of tools.
What You Will Do
- Be a thought partner to Organization Champions, Campaign Managers, Campaign Recipients, and engineering leadership in setting the vision, strategy, and adoption path for fleet-wide change management as a platform capability.
- Own the technical architecture direction for a composable, declarative platform that generalizes beyond any single migration use case.
- Serve as a credible technical advisor to your team, helping engineers navigate ambiguous, cross-domain technical decisions — and act as the team's escalation point for novel campaigns that span multiple technical domains.
- Drive AI-first ways of working across the team: treat AI-assisted code modification as core infrastructure, and advance agent-assisted engineering practices with the code review, change-risk management, testing, and evaluation rigor required to run them safely at scale.
- Raise the team's rigor around impact — define meaningful adoption and adherence metrics, use historical campaign data to predict and target automation investment, and prioritize based on evidence rather than only inbound requests.
- Own the operational excellence of a platform relied on across the fleet, including on-call responsibilities, telemetry and dashboards for fleet health, and feedback loops that continuously improve campaign design and execution.
- Communicate complex technical and product tradeoffs clearly, in writing and verbally, to influence decisions across a broad set of stakeholders — including technical executives, SREs, and security incident commanders.
- Lead, hire, coach, and develop a team of engineers; challenge them to expand their ownership and grow their impact beyond their immediate scope.
- Foster a strong culture of accountability, and build an inclusive team environment where every engineer feels empowered to contribute at their best.
What We Are Looking For
- Experience building and operating platform systems that support large-scale, business-critical use cases, including on-call responsibilities and resilient, well-instrumented services.
- Strong technical acumen in distributed systems and developer platforms, with the ability to move between architecture and implementation detail, and to represent technical decisions credibly to partner teams.
- Experience building and leading inclusive engineering teams, attracting and retaining talent, and fostering a culture where individuals take ownership while contributing to shared outcomes.
- Strong long-term strategic thinking and a platform mindset — able to define a technical vision for composable, extensible systems and connect it to broader organizational goals.
- Proven ability to navigate ambiguity, influence without authority, and partner effectively with senior stakeholders across engineering, product, and security.
- Rigor in decision-making: comfortable reducing ambiguity through a mix of data, stakeholder input, constructive dissent, and targeted experiments.
- Fluency with AI-assisted engineering, with a clear point of view on how to adopt GenAI-driven code transformation and agentic tooling safely at scale.
- Strong technical writing skills — design docs, tradeoff analyses, postmortems — and a track record of driving complex, cross-functional technical projects from design through completion.
Nice to Have
- Experience with large-scale code migration or modernization campaigns.
- Experience building or operating fleet-management, dependency graph, or service catalog systems.
- Background in platform or infrastructure engineering organizations.
- Familiarity with Java or Python in a backend services context.
- Experience designing platforms where agents, not just humans, are first-class consumers — including provisioning and debugging through APIs rather than a UI.
- Experience with cloud infrastructure (AWS preferred: EC2, S3, EKS/Kubernetes).
