Stanford University School of Medicine’s Lane Medical Library accelerates scientific discovery, clinical care, medical education and humanities through teaching, collaboration, and delivery of biomedical and historical resources. The library is a state-of-the-art medical library within the Medical Student Education group which supports Stanford Medical Center’s research, education, and patient care objectives. Lane Library supports its mission to accelerate scientific discovery in part by curating a collection of print and digital knowledge resources relevant to the in-depth research, graduate-level education, and clinical patient care performed by the Stanford Medicine community and its affiliated hospitals and clinics. About the Position
Lane Library, Stanford Medicine seeks a Resource Sharing Librarian (Librarian 2). The position will assist library patrons (faculty, students, researchers, and other library users) in obtaining information resources. The Resource Sharing Librarian reports to the Manager of Access Services and performs and manages daily interlibrary loan and document delivery operations, coordinates the movement and management of materials in remote/offsite storage, staffs the information desk, and serves as a liaison to assigned subject areas, including the rare books collection. This role coordinates the work of the ILL/Document Delivery team. They will work closely with Lane staff units and other SOM stakeholders to develop services that are responsive to the needs of users and are sustainable for library staff.
This position will be based on the Stanford campus and will be considered for an option of telecommuting (hybrid of working 2-3 days on-site), subject to operational need.
Core Duties
Oversee and perform all administrative aspects of Resource Sharing Services, including day-to-day operations, goal tracking, annual and statistical reporting, and the development, adoption, evaluation, and continuous improvement of system-wide services, practices, and policies to ensure efficient operations and an exceptional user experience.
Represent Lane Library nationally and within professional organizations in matters related to Resource Sharing Services, and provide leadership and expertise on resource sharing initiatives, practices, policies, and service development.
Supervise Document Delivery/Interlibrary Loan operations (.5 FTE), including monitoring the Clio ILL system, coordinating with staff to plan and execute system upgrades and enhancements, and ensuring effective and efficient service delivery.
Manage remote storage transfers involving remote locations, including arranging physical shipments, coordinating service requirements, overseeing related data processing, and analyzing technical, access, storage, and environmental needs to support the preservation and accessibility of library materials.
Evaluate library plans, operations, services, policies, and resource needs and make recommendations to management regarding improvements to library operations, electronic and manual resource tools, systems, access, and services.
Select library materials and information resources within assigned subject areas, including responsibility for collection management and preservation decision-making, and catalog books, serials, government documents, and other library materials while developing and maintaining bibliographic and reference links.
Serve as a liaison to specified subject areas within the Research and Instruction Program, which may include Rare Books, providing reference and research assistance to patrons and staff and supporting access to print, electronic, bibliographic, and other library resources.
Teach classes, lead tours, and provide demonstrations and instruction on library resources, services, research tools, and systems; provide donors with information regarding the terms of donated collections; and approve or coordinate, as appropriate, loans of repository materials to external organizations for exhibitions, including negotiation of loan terms.
May manage additional library or student staff and provide guidance, training, and oversight related to assigned programs, services, collections, and operations.
Required Education and Experience
Advanced Degree in Library Science or a relevant academic discipline with demonstrated understanding of academic libraries and two or more years of relevant
experience in a relevant library setting or a combination of education and relevant experience.
Desired Qualifications
- Two or more years of experience in resource sharing and access services including interlibrary loan and document delivery, circulation services, and related library areas.
- Knowledge of interlibrary loan / document delivery systems (e.g., Clio, Docline, WorldShare ILL), resource-sharing networks, and copyright as it applies to library lending.
- Demonstrated supervisory skills; accuracy and attention to detail.
- Experience coordinating offsite / remote storage operations and shipments. Familiarity with the Caiasoft warehouse management system a plus.
- Experience with automated library systems, content delivery platforms, and software products related to the responsibilities indicated for this position and the ability to learn and master new software, systems and technology, and to generate reports and work with data.
- Experience providing reference and instruction services. Knowledge of rare book and archives collections a plus.
- Strong oral and written communication skills and ability to work effectively with diverse constituencies.
- Knowledge of academic health sciences, preferably including related subject expertise in the biosciences.

- Demonstrated initiative, flexibility, and ability to work and learn in a rapidly changing environment

Physical Requirements
- Constantly sit, perform desk-based computer tasks.
- Frequently twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasps lightly/fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10
- pounds.
- Occasionally stand/walk, reach/work above shoulders, writing by hand, kneel/crawl, climb (ladders, scaffolds, or other).
- Rarely use a telephone, operate hand controls.
- Must be able to push and maneuver a fully-loaded cart weighing up to 650 pounds that requires
Working Conditions:
- May work in confined spaces and at heights 4-10 feet; be exposed to dust and mold; work extended hours, evenings and weekends.
