About LPSD

The Large Power Systems Division (LPSD) is part of Caterpillar’s Power & Energy segment. Through this global organization, Caterpillar designs and manufacture large (greater than 18 liters) diesel and natural gas engines, powertrains and key engine systems. LPSD products and solutions support customers across power generation, industrial, marine, oil & gas, rail, services and Cat® machine applications worldwide.

Job Summary

The Caterpillar Large Engine Center, based in Lafayette, IN is looking for a self-motivated facilities engineer that is skilled in the electrical trade to provide technical expertise, leadership, and guidance to ensure the economical design, construction, installation, and maintenance of assigned systems, equipment, and other large-scope projects associated with plant engineering responsibilities.

In this role you would report through the facilities engineering team and provide guidance in the maintenance and improvement of various facility, manufacturing processes, and equipment. This will include design, construction, systems integration, maintenance, and other services needed to support our operations. You will be responsible to ensure all established standards, policies, and practices related to quality, safety, cost reduction, hazardous materials, ergonomics, etc… are compliant for the projects that you work on. You will have a direct impact on our key goals including safety, continuous improvement, delivery performance, equipment availability, operational efficiency, cost savings, process capability, etc.

What you will do:

• Work assignments are assigned based on specific background and major projects are divided according to individual expertise, experience, and educational background. Coordination between the various disciplines is essential for successful completion of assignments. This assignment will be geared to systems integration of manufacturing equipment and the support services needed to maintain equipment and/or building operations.
• Creating technical specifications and functional requirements for facilities related projects. Determining acceptability of new equipment based on industrial and Caterpillar specific equipment specifications and recommending modifications or revisions as necessary.
• Adhering to established standards, policies and practices relating to quality, cost reduction, safety, hazardous materials, and ergonomics in performing assigned duties.
• Maintaining standards and specifications, recommending changes to resolve design and construction problems, and writing periodic reports on the progress of projects.
• Estimating costs for equipment, materials, and installation as a basis for determining the feasibility of alternatives and return on investment.
• Providing design information, reviewing and approving proposals, and serving as the primary company contact.
• Approving drawings, specifying equipment, and writing purchase requisitions.
• Supervising work of outside contractors.
• Acting as a troubleshooter, often alongside maintenance, and investigating and determining causes for failure, lack of efficiency, and need for repairing or improving systems or equipment.
• Resolving problems in designing the most economical, efficient systems, and deciding what or which equipment should be purchased.
• Serving as first line of support for building service problems and work requests; often Troubleshooting throughout the facility to determine the cause of failure, the lack of efficiency, and the need for repair or improvement of systems or equipment.
• Assisting other facility engineers and supporting manufacturing and other related departments.

Skills you must have:

• Plant Facilities Management: Extensive knowledge of processes, methodologies and techniques used to manage plant facilities; ability to handle the full spectrum of activities for managing and maintaining physical facilities and infrastructure.
• Construction Engineering and Technology: Basic knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology to the construction industry; ability to apply principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment for a specific branch of engineering to the design and production of various goods and services.
• Engineering - MFG: Working knowledge of processes, techniques, and methods of engineering in a manufacturing environment; ability to design and implement materials, structures, machines, devices, systems, and processes that safely realize a desired objective or invention.
• Manufacturing Standards, Procedures and Policies: Working knowledge of organizational standards, procedures, and policies in manufacturing activities; ability to plan, guide, and monitor manufacturing processes for compliance.
• Troubleshooting Technical Problems: Extensive knowledge of troubleshooting approaches, tools and techniques; ability to anticipate, detect and resolve technical problems in a manufacturing environment.
• Problem Solving: Extensive knowledge of approaches, tools, and techniques for recognizing, anticipating, and resolving organizational, operational or process problems; ability to apply knowledge of problem solving appropriately to diverse situations.
• Effective Communications: Extensive understanding of effective communication concepts, tools, and techniques; ability to effectively transmit, receive, and accurately interpret ideas, information, and needs through the application of appropriate communication behaviors.
• Project Management: Working knowledge of effective project management strategies and tactics; ability to plan, organize, monitor, and control projects, ensuring efficient utilization of technical and administrative resources to achieve project objectives.

Education:

• Accredited engineering or engineering technology degree or equivalent experience

Top candidates will also have:

• Industrial facility and capital project experience
• HVAC/Mechanical, power distribution, or electrical utilities/equipment project experiences
• Basic understanding of controls and automation; specifically ABB/Rockwell hardware and software
• Building management system experience (Simplex experience is a plus)
• Ability to use AutoCAD or other engineering software tools
• Demonstrated ability to participate in and develop preventative maintenance programs
• Understanding of NFPA 70E

Summary Pay Range:

$97,530.00 - $146,290.00

Compensation and benefits offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, job level, market location, job-related knowledge, skills, individual performance and experience. Please note that salary is only one component of total compensation at Caterpillar.
